The arrival of spring and milder temperatures makes us appreciate fresher flavours. We more happily start walking around the city again and rediscover time in the open air. It’s not hard to picture ourselves sipping something tasty while strolling in a park, or even in the garden or on our balcony at home.

Let’s try to prepare a coffee smoothie together, a creamy and nutritious smoothie that could become your favourite new drink of the season!

The intensity of espresso coffee meets the sweetness of banana and honey for a delicious, fresh drink, perfect for many of moments on a hot day. Let’s learn more about the smoothie, before diving into our recipe.

History

The smoothie is a thick drink made of fresh fruit (or vegetables), milk or yogurt and ice, all blended together.

The history of the smoothie dates back to the 1930s when commercial blenders became popular in bars and restaurants across the United States.

In the 1960s and 1970s, the smoothie became popular among health and wellness enthusiasts, who considered it ideal for a healthy and natural diet.

Finally, the drink experienced a boom in the 1990s, when it became a quick and practical option to replace a regular meal, both in America and in Europe.

Our espresso smoothie recipe is a variation on the classic drink, which combines the energy of coffee with the creaminess of fruit.

We recommend trying it for breakfast or as a snack during the day, perhaps for a quick break from work.

Ingredients

2-3 small cups espresso coffee

1 cup cold milk (also plant-based)

1 ripe banana

1 tablespoon honey

1 cup ice cubes

Instructions

Prepare two or three cups of espresso coffee and let it cool to room temperature.

Peel the banana and cut it into pieces.

Put the banana, honey, cold milk and cooled espresso into the blender. Add the ice cubes.

Blend the ingredients until you achieve a smooth and homogeneous consistency.

If the smoothie is too thick, add a little cold milk or water to reach the desired consistency.

Finally, pour the coffee smoothie into a tall glass and enjoy immediately, or place it in an insulated cup and savour it while you walk!

Remember that the quality of the espresso coffee is essential for the success of this smoothie. Using Gaggia coffee and a Gaggia machine guarantees a perfect, intense and decisive espresso, which pairs perfectly with the smoothie recipe.
